HANG ART artist Jose Arenas was recently commissioned to paint a 15 foot high by 153 foot wide mural in SoFa (South First Area) in San Jose. The mural reflects, among other things, the diverse cultural heritage of SoFa’s large East Asian and Latino population. Jose grew up close to the mural site at 417 South First Street, which contributes to the personal perspective expressed in the mural’s imagery.
Arenas believes that, “Art, in particular public art, is a powerful tool to educate, empower, and build awareness within a Community – to help local residents and broader audiences remember the past and celebrate new directions.”
The mural was commissioned by 1st Act, an organization that works together with San Jose retailers, art galleries, and property owners on a variety of downtown beautification projects
Be sure to check out the mural at 417 South First Street in San Jose. If you cannot make it to the South Bay, here are some photographs to satiate your interest.
