Positive Reception Studio Visit – Nicholas Bohac

Titled, Positive Reception, our June Exhibition will feature the work of several guest artists. Some of these guests, like Nicholas Bohac, aren’t necessarily strangers though. Way back in June 2008 we featured Nicholas in a group exhibition titled, A Class. Since then we have kept our eye on this rising star of the San Francisco art scene.

In preparation for the exhibition we stopped by his funky studio, which occupies the back basement of his house in the Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco.

Once inside his studio it became immediately apparent that Bohac is a true mixed media artist. He silk screens, collages, pours paint, and rubs alcohol. Nicholas has even been known to take photographs of trees off of television and video games then print them out and paste them on the work. Working with with intuition his scenes are definitely other-worldly and he is conscious that he develops these places that were once inhabited but are no longer.

The image of the Tree was apparent in a significant amount of Bohac’s work. On his daily runs through the park or along Ocean Beach Nicholas admires the trees and their Fibonacci sequence, patterning, and fractals. The inclusion of the trees “vomiting rainbows” in desolate environments adds a strong “postdigital” aesthetic.
