Studio Visit – Kelly DeFayette

The late afternoon Summer Sun peeking into the courtyard

Summer in San Francisco can often be foggy and downright cold, that is why we were tickled by the sunshine and fair weather that greeted us at Kelly DeFayette’s Cow Hollow studio. As usual, we received a nice warm welcome from Kelly too.

Value judgements.

Once inside we started talking shop, getting a little bit of insight into Kelly’s process and inspiration. At the core of her practice seems to be an exploration in color. With her tessellating geometric panels the color interactions within the pieces are secondary to the chance color interactions with the pieces next to them.

Spraypaint and casettes, rocking it old school.

Kelly creates such a wide range of color by both, mixing acrylic paint and a whole lot of different colors of spray-paint. We are such fans of the final product that we are pleased to announce that Kelly will be featured in a solo exhibition at HANG ART in February 2012.

Mark your calendars.

We won’t spoil the surprise, but Kelly has something special planned for the exhibition. It is sure to bring a little bit of the color of our rare Summer sunshine to the dead of Winter.

A little splash of pink sends us off.
