Lean Art

New paintings by Jenny E. Balisle that were just brought in to the gallery.

Even though we are called Hang Art you are very likely to see a number of paintings leaning out when you visit the gallery. It is not that we have an aversion to hanging artwork, we actually rehang the gallery once every two weeks at the least. The truth is, between showing artwork from our extensive storage, new work coming in, or artwork going to it’s new home, we have a lot of paintings in transition. So the next time you pop into the gallery and see work leaning out please excuse the mess. We are just busy sharing the amazing artwork of our local artists.

Location, Location, Location

Taking the art out of the gallery at the AAF 2010.

This May HANG ART will be at the center of an art explosion as we participate in three seprate art fairs in addition to the exhibition at our San Francisco gallery. Envisioned as an exhibition in four parts titled Location, Location, Location, each fair will feature a curated grouping of new and exciting work and no two locations will feature the same artists.

The fun begins on May 4th in New York as we participate in the Affordable Art Fair for the third year in a row. We don’t want to spoil all the surprises, but expect new work from AAF veterans like Tjasa Owen and David Lippenberger as well as a featured special installation by rising star Kelly Defayette.

Next up is our First Thursday opening on May 5th with a sampling of the best that our San Francisco artists have to offer.

On May 19th galleries from around the world will descend onto our home turf as San Francisco hosts the return of the San Francisco Fine Art Fair. We have spent the past year working closely with Jenny E. Balisle, Fain Hancock, Katja Leibenath, and Addie Shevlin as they each have prepared an amazing body of work to be premiered at the SFFAF.

As if this isn’t enough of a feast for your eyes, we are also bringing a punch of color and excitement to the newest art fair on the block, ArtPadSF. Running concurrently as the San Francisco Fine Art Fair, ArtPadSF will transform San Francisco’s hip Phoenix Hotel into a collection of exhibition spaces.

We would love to see you at our various booths as we bring the love of HANG ART out of the gallery and into the larger world. If you cannot make it, don’t fret, because images of everything will be online before the events.

DAVe Warnke brought in highly anticipated new artworks to the gallery yesterday.

ARTWORK OF THE WEEK

Addie Shevlin‘s Glacier is named artwork of the week.  Sized at 7″ x 11″  this oil landscape painting extends beyond its small panel. Shevlin’s landscapes transition between large scale canvases and small works on panel.  It is common practice for artists to work within a consistent size range when creating a body of work ,but  Shevlin  is fluent in translating the same amount of atmosphere in her compositions regardless of canvas size.

ARTWORKS IN CONVERSATION

When hanging multiple works in a single space, it is important to incorporate a variety of works that “speak” to each other.  Finding commonalities in color palate, line quality, shapes, moods or concepts is key when collecting art or rotating your collection.

Take these two works for example.  The work on the left, Isolation/Solitude by Nicolas Van Kridjt isa painting created with pigmented wax. The work on the right, Rust by Anthony May, is a paper based collage painting.  While both artists are using highly tactile mediums when placed together the emphasis of Van Krijdt’s peice is directed towards the smooth textures of the minimal lines.  In relation to May’s work the layered surface shifts to the black shapes, the graphics of the lettering on the paper and the gestural lines which create a symbiotic relationship between the two different artworks.

3.5.11 Week In Review

Ladies and Gentlemen… JENNY E. BALISLE!

This week has been full of events surrounding Jenny E. Balisle’s new series of paintings.  These works have shifted dramatically from a heavier  to a softer enveloping color palate which Balisle attributes to moving her studio from West Oakland to a new serene bay front location in Point Richmond.

Please join us on March 13th at 3 PM for an artist talk with Jenny E. Balisle.

Taking  up to a year to dry, the multiple layers of oil paint expand and contract throughout the drying process allowing Balisle to create this visceral silkiness.  This technique draws the body close to the work evoking an overwhelming urge to interact with the surface.  Stop in the gallery to experience this work in person. The exhibition will be on display until March 15th.

Blue City by Addie Shevlin returned to the gallery from our framers.  Shevlin is fascinated by framing options for her work and currently feels that a crisp black boarder drastically transforms her paintings.  While it is not typically required to have a work on canvas framed it can be a wonderful tool in complementing a completed artwork. Additionally, framing artworks can add uniformity between multiple pieces in a room.   Whatever your taste may be, contemporary or traditional, we are more than willing to facilitate your framing needs.

Using a variety of artists working with a similar scale or color scheme allows you to have a hand in creating a more personalize wall piece.  Shown below are new works by Katja Leibenath and Fain Hancock.

Kelly DeFayette is one of our newest artists whose work we can’t keep in the gallery long enough to display it. With no wrong way of installing these sculptural objects, DeFayette encourages a playfulness with the multitude of  space and color arrangements.  The image below shows a grouping made from some of the 19 newest arrivals.

until next week!

Studio Visit: Jenny E. Balisle

The view from the back deck

We woke up early last month and grabbed a couple cups of coffee before we zipped across the Bay to Jenny E. Balisle’s studio to select work for her solo exhibition at the gallery in March.

Jenny and Scout in her studio.

We were glad that we were smart enough to grab coffee ahead of time, because when we arrived Jenny was ready to hit the ground running.

Factor XX

A detail of the art of Klari Reis, one of the artists featured in Factor XX.

While over half of the artists we represent at HANG are women, the art world has long discriminated against the work of women artists. With this in mind Hang artist Jenny E. Balisle organized an exhibition of eleven female artists, all of whom are working in the field of abstraction. Titled, Factor XX the exhibition is currently at the Museum of Los Gatos from now until January 21, 2011 with an opening reception on December 4th.  For more information on all of the artists, Factor XX events, and on how to get an exhibition catalog visit factorxx.com.
